A Tribute to Mother

Freestyle/Free Verse – “Free verse is a form of poetry that does not use consistent meter patterns, rhyme, or any other musical pattern. It thus tends to follow the rhythm of natural speech.  However, it’s been noted by poets that a good free verse poem is ironically not “free” at all and will still contain some elements of form.”  (Definition paraphrased from Wikipedia, August 14, 2012)

Mother

By Rita H. Chen

Mother’s hands
Tough and worn
More precious than
Hands of princesses

Mother is not rich
Can offer no money
Gives the wisdom of
Many Taiwan years
Experience

Can lose her temper
Say hurtful things
She’s human
Carelessness blends her with me

Not beautiful
Has not a perfect figure
Eyes are pools of kindness
Loving

Often nags
Can be annoying
Affection in her chiding
Her love is immense

Mother appears weak
But she is strong
Determination of steel
Courage of a lion
Mountain of faith
Incredible

Rita’s Musings:  The form is a little off in this poem and this is far from my best piece of work (though I do think there are some nice moments here), however, this piece is close to my heart for very obvious reasons.
