Youth!
By Rita H. Chen
“Aren’t your bangs bothering you?”
as you sit down,
a rhetorical question with only one answer
that you purposely get incorrect
“Youth!”
as she sets toast and eggs down,
food you want to spitefully reject
if not for morning hunger pains
“Don’t eat so fast. You’ll get indigestion,”
as you shovel breakfast in,
and against better judgment
you chew more slowly
“I can’t believe your bangs don’t bother you,”
as you put your plate in the sink,
hightailing it out
while planning to dye your hair pink
Rita’s Musings: The length of my bangs seems to be a constant sore spot for my mother. Thought I would write a little something in honour of our conversations. Now if only I could dye my hair pink…
