For He is Faithful

For He is Faithful

By Rita H. Chen

God called me to Him,
Lovingly gave me a seed,
Said to me, “Plant it.”

“Watch it grow.”

I held the tiny seed,
Cupped reverently between both hands,
Said to Him, “I can’t.”

“I’m not ready.”

Finally knelt with trepidation,
Covered the seed with soil,
Said to Him, “I’ll give it a try.”

“May it grow quickly.”

There was no change,
Despite my perceived best efforts,
Said to Him, “You gave this to me.”

“Why is nothing happening?”

He smiled at me,
Covered my wringing hands with His own,
Said to me, “Yes, I gave this to you.”

“Let me teach you how to do this.”

I nodded,
Soon shooed Him off,
Said to Him, “I know better.”

“Let me do this my way.”

He merely gazed at me,
Let His hands fall to His side,
Said to me, “You know so little.”

“But I’ll let you do what you want.”

Time passed, Sought Him out again,
Squeezed His arms tightly with anxious tears,
Said to Him, “It’s been years!”

“Why isn’t it growing?”

He took my hands in His own,
With a sad smile I misinterpreted,
Said to me, “You didn’t listen.”

“Why didn’t you trust what I had to say?”

I yanked my hands from His grasp,
Beat furious fists against His chest,
Said to Him, “I do! I did!”

“But Your way made no sense to me.”

He let me weep,
Till my breath stopped hitching,
Said to me, “Do you?”

“For you don’t trust that I know best.”

I left Him then,
Ran and abandoned the seed I planted,
Said to Him, “I can’t handle this. This is crazy.”

“This is too much for me.”

Several years passed,
Tried my hand at other things but failed,
Said to Him, “I’m back and I’m sorry.”

“Please let me try this again.”

He opened His arms,
Let me crawl contritely into His embrace,
Said to me, “I never left.”

“I was waiting for you to return.”

Humbled by His easy forgiveness,
Shyly from under my lashes I peeked,
Said to Him, “I’m not deserving but take my hand.”

“Lead me down the path I’m to go.”

He picked me up instead,
Cradled me gently against His chest,
Said to me, “I’ll do more than that.”

“I’ll carry you every step of the way.”

Rita’s Musings: I know I’ve experienced moments where I was too stubborn to heed the Lord. Perhaps you have too? If you have, I hope that this little poem will have encouraged you.
